Introducing Orion, Meta’s new Reality Glasses

At the Meta Connect event on Wednesday, Alex Himel, the vice president of augmented reality, came on stage with a briefcase handcuffed to his wrist.

“This is Orion,” said CEO Mark Zuckerberg as he showed off Meta’s augmented reality glasses. “It’s our first working prototype and, if I may say, the most advanced glasses ever.”

Mark Zuckerberg believes Orion can connect the digital and real world, potentially replacing smartphones, but its launch may be delayed. Zuckerberg believes Orion can link the digital world to real life and might eventually replace smartphones. But the launch could be farther off than some fans think.

Meta aims to start selling its long-awaited AR glasses in 2027. However, some people who worked on the Orion project believe that, even though the glasses are seen as special, they might never be available for customers or make money for the company.

Orion has three main parts: the glasses, a wristband, and a small device called a puck that handles graphics and connections. The puck is known as the “central compute.” It includes key materials like a special wave-guide between two lenses, seven cameras, two tiny projectors, and custom silicon, which is one of the costliest components.
