Microsoft will let Windows 11 users change what the new Copilot key does on their laptops and keyboards. It now opens the Copilot app by default, but users will soon be able to open other apps instead.
A new test version of Windows 11 has this option for testers. Users can set the key to open safe apps that meet security standards. If they don’t change it, the key will still open Copilot.
This key is the first big change to Windows keyboards in 30 years and aims to encourage more people to use Microsoft’s AI assistant.
New PCs with the Copilot key started shipping earlier this year, but the Copilot app became less useful because it was changed to a web app that doesn’t work with Windows settings.
It’s unclear how Microsoft will improve the Copilot experience or if the key will work like the Windows key for shortcuts.
Since this customization is available for beta testers now, it should be available for all Windows 11 users in the coming months.
