HTC has announced the Vive Focus Vision, a new VR headset that improves on the Vive Focus 3. It includes features like color passthrough and better support for connecting to a PC. The Focus Vision costs $999 and can be pre-ordered on HTC’s website until October 17th.
You can use the Focus Vision or connect it to your PC with a USB-C cable. It has the same resolution (2448 x 2448 for each eye) and wide field of view (120 degrees) as the Focus 3, which was released in 2021 and runs on the Snapdragon XR2 chip. New features include dual 16MP cameras for color passthrough and automatic lens adjustments based on the distance between your eyes.
HTC is targeting gamers with its new headset, the Vive Focus Vision. It features foveated rendering, which means it only uses graphics power where you’re looking, instead of covering your whole view. “Now, PC gamers can use high-end headsets like those in VR arcades at home,” said Shen Ye, HTC Vive’s global head of product.
The Focus Vision also supports DisplayPort through USB-C, which allows for a clear connection to your PC. After an update later this year, it will increase the display’s refresh rate from 90Hz to 120Hz. It has 128GB of storage (plus a microSD slot for up to 2TB more) and 12GB of RAM, an upgrade from the previous model’s 8GB. The headset works with all Focus 3 accessories.
Its built-in battery lasts 20 minutes, so you can change the main battery if you run out of power during its two-hour life. A new fan helps keep the headset cool by moving 30% more air.
The head strap has also been improved. “Users can be rough with it,” said Dan O’Brien, HTC president for the Americas, which helped the company find weaknesses in the Focus 3 design. As a result, HTC has strengthened the back metal hook and made the side arms better.
The Vive Focus Vision is aimed at consumers, similar to the Focus 3, which had controllers like the Quest 2. Previous Focus headsets were mainly for businesses. HTC also has other consumer headsets, like last year’s Vive XR Elite, which is lighter and costs $1,099 but has lower-resolution screens.
Anyone who preorders before October 17th will receive a free kit that includes a 5-meter USB-C cable and various adapters for PC VR streaming, along with a choice of three popular game bundles.
