Google Kills Support for UBlock Origin in Latest Update.

Google has stepped up its efforts to combat ad blockers on all of its services. According to a report by PC World, the corporation has made some changes to its Google Chrome extension support, effectively killing support for known Ad Blocker Ublock Origin.

Google Chrome now supports the new Manifest V3 framework instead of the outdated Manifest V2 framework for extensions. The modifications to browser policies would affect uBlock Origin, possibly the most widely used ad blocker.

Remotely-hosted code is no longer supported by extensions such as uBlock Origin due to the switch to the Manifest V3 architecture. Google claims this “presents security risks by allowing unreviewed code to be executed in extensions.” Only extensions that include JavaScript in their package will be able to run scripts thanks to the new policy modifications.

uBlock Origin is used by over 30 million Google Chrome users, but an upgrade is scheduled to deactivate the tool automatically. Before it is eliminated, Google will allow users to activate the function through the settings for a brief amount of time. Users will then have no choice except to go to a different browser or a different ad blocker.

The developer has updated uBlock Origin Lite, a program that complies with Manifest V3. It’s important to note that although the new app has many of the same features as the previous one, such as basic ad-blocking capabilities, it does not enable dynamic filters to prevent scriptlet insertion. Because the Lite version complies with the Manifest V3 framework level, its possibilities are somewhat restricted.

Raymond Hill, the creator of uBlock Origin, claims that

“In my opinion, uBO Lite differs too much from uBO to be a suitable substitute. You will need to specifically look for a content blocker that meets your needs in order to replace uBO. You might or might not get what you expected with uBO Lite.”
