Between the smaller Google Pixel 9 Pro model and the bigger Pixel 9 Pro XL, the Pixel 9 series offers a new model. With a conventional (although still extremely broad) camera block in place of the “Geordi Visor” back band, all three have a more modern design. Unquestionably, it looks cleaner.
All of it comes with a $100 increase in price: the Pixel 9 is priced at $799, the Pixel 9 Pro at $999, and the Pixel 9 Pro XL at $1,099 starting at launch.
Other than that, the phones’ internals don’t appear or feel all that different from those of their predecessors. The phones come with the most recent Tensor G4 processor from Google, and the Pixel 9 has 12GB of RAM out of the box along with 128GB and 256GB of storage choices. In addition, the Pro and Pro XL variants provide 1TB and 512GB capacities in addition to 16GB of RAM. Although the phones’ battery size hasn’t increased much over the years, Google says the phones have a 20% longer battery life thanks to a new cooling chamber within.
The 48-megapixel ultrawide camera in the Pixel 9 basic model is a small improvement over the Pixel 8’s 12-megapixel camera; however, the cameras on the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL remain largely the same. Rather than relying only on artificial intelligence for photography, Google is heavily utilizing Add Me, a tool that combines various images to create the ideal group photo that contains everyone. When snapping selfies, Guided Frame assists those with impaired vision and those without sight in lining up their face within the frame.
The successor to last year’s Pixel Fold dubbed the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, has eschewed the broader dimensions of its predecessor in favor of a taller configuration akin to the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and other book-style foldable. Apart from incorporating the visor-free appearance of the Pixel 9, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a few specifications enhancements. Its base configuration, which has 256GB of storage and 12GB of RAM, is unchanged; however, the RAM is increased to 16GB with the 512GB and 1TB choices. At $1,799, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is priced.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold will also receive some adorable software gimmicks after launch. Fun characters are displayed on the cover screen of Made You Look to entertain your child as you snap pictures.
Though Google has guaranteed us that the phones would receive the upgrade when it comes out at an indeterminate date, the Pixel 9 series is debuting with Android 14, not the impending Android 15. This isn’t shocking considering that Google moved forward the release date of the Pixel 9 from October, when it usually holds Pixel events, to August. Nevertheless, seven years of Android operating system and security upgrades are provided to all Pixel 9 phones.
All Pixel 9 smartphones will come with Satellite SOS, a new feature that lets the phones use satellite networks to seek assistance (much like Apple’s Emergency SOS).
