We won’t have to wait for Google’s next hardware event to get Chromecast‘s heir. Google is introducing the new Google TV Streamer, a $99.99 setup that empowers the Chromecast with Google TV with better thread and matter integration, performance, and features like a remote finder.
Moreover, Google threw in a few Gemini tricks, and with hardware upgrades such as the built-in ethernet jack, the streamer seems poised to be a better entertainment hub than the Chromecast. unfortunately, since it’s not a dongle anymore, you need your own HDMI cable.
Also, the device comes in 2 colors: Porcelain and Hazel, with the latter being exclusive to the Google Store. Contrasting the Chromecast, which is easily hidden behind the TV, the streamer is designed to sit underneath it and be visible. Google designed it to be underneath the TV because it includes a thread border router and connectivity support for matter technology.
This leads us to a new key feature: with one button press on the remote, you can pull up a Google Home panel on the right side of your screen, giving easy control over your smart home devices and cameras from your couch.
The Google TV Streamer is mostly an entertainment gadget. Google seems to recognize that customers have long been hoping for a more powerful device that doesn’t suffer from the lag and hitches of the underpowered Chromecast with Google TV. The new hardware has a 22% faster processor, double the RAM and 32 GB of integrated storage.
Google has always prioritized value and price over device performance, but the new smart home features and hardware upgrades might have hit the target.
Sadly, there is over a month to wait before we find out. The Google TV Streamer will be available starting September 24th for $ 99.99.
