Meta Releases Threads, an Attempt to Challenge Twitter.

After weeks of rumors, Threads, Meta’s attempt to challenge Twitter, is now here. Mark Zuckerberg took to Facebook to announce the new service a couple of hours before its official release, calling it “an open and friendly public space for conversation”.

Threads itself looks similar to Twitter. It supports text posts of up to 500 characters, as well as photos and videos that are up to five minutes long. Threads also support reposts as well as quote reposts. And as a bonus posts from Threads can be easily shared to users’ Instagram Story for added visibility.

The launch itself comes at the best time for Meta, as Twitter’s actions over the past couple of days have caused people to question whether they should stay on the platform.

Some basic features are missing from this version of Threads like hashtags, account switching on the same device, and post-editing, Not to mention Threads is only available on Android and iOS, the website is read-only meaning you can only view Threads but not post. But that hasn’t stopped Threads from gaining over 20 Million users less than 12 hours after its release.

It will certainly be interesting to see how Elon Musk responds to the new platform. But I guess we just have to wait and see.
